P.J. Hoerr Corporate History & Timeline

Now into our 100th year of operation we thought sharing a timeline of services provided, ownership transitions and company acquisitions would be helpful.

P.J. Hoerr, Inc. now stands as one of Central Illinois’ premier general contractors, construction managers and design/builders. Founded in 1914 by Philipp J. Hoerr as a concrete construction company, our stamp can still be seen on many area driveways and sidewalks. Now, going on a hundred years later P.J. Hoerr has become a diverse, multi-office commercial builder performing approximately $90 million of work annually.

P.J. Hoerr is privately owned with our majority owner Mr. Robert Hoerr serving as Chairman and CEO. Robert is the grandson of Philipp J. Hoerr and continues to lead our company based on strong Christian values. He is ably teamed in this endeavor with co-owners Joe Hart, President and COO; Paul Bright, Vice-President; Kirk Anderson, Vice-President and John Moses, Vice-President.

What makes P.J. Hoerr different than other area contractors is the large amount of partnered and design/build work that we perform. The vast majority of our work is contracted in this manner. We pride ourselves on being team players and we are very willing and able to take responsibility for both the design and the construction on our projects. We also know that cost is always an issue in construction so P.J. Hoerr will continue to pursue contracts on a hard bid basis. We believe this keeps “our pencil sharp” and maintains our knowledge on current market costs.

In addition, no other Central Illinois firm has such a wealth of health care experience. P.J. Hoerr has worked in the health care field for over 25 years. In that time we have constructed and helped design dozens of projects ranging from complete hospitals and large medical office buildings to hundreds of small remodels and additions. Our firm knows the health care business and how to work around patients and how to work with the state regulatory authorities.

Another aspect of our firm that sets us apart is our abilities and desire to provide pre-construction services. We pride ourselves on the ability to work as a part of the design team to develop budgets, produce design and construction schedules, develop phased construction schemes and offer value-engineering cost alternatives. We analyze projects to determine long-lead materials and equipment and then procure them early in the process.

In our relentless effort to maintain high quality construction while reducing completion time to a minimum, we have created two other affiliated companies that work with us to achieve these ends. These firms, Summit Masonry and Stoneworks and Benchmark Cabinets and Millwork provide materials and craftsmanship during critical portions of the construction process.

Our P.J. Hoerr team of over 150 full-time employees in our Peoria and Normal, Illinois offices stand ready to develop creative ways to help you design, manage and build your next construction project. Our philosophy of teamwork and our unwavering commitment to Mr. Hoerr’s early ideals of hard work and quality guide us to our ultimate goal…an enthusiastic and valued client.
